La Liga round-up: Madrid edge out Numancia; Valencia draw

Monday, September 15, 2008

Defending champion Real Madrid earned its first points of the season as they twice came from behind to overcome newly-promoted Numancia 4-3 at the Bernabéu.

Numancia, on a high after defeating Barcelona, stunned the home fans when Juan Carlos Moreno opening the scoring after just six minutes.

Guti equalised in the 18th-minute with Real's 5,000th La Liga goal but Jose Barkero put the visitors back in front with an unstoppable shot from 30 yards out.

However, Bernd Schuster's side replied with three goals before half-time as Gonzalo Higuaín and Rafael van der Vaart scored before Numancia defender Cisma Domingo put the ball into his own net to make it 4-2.

Moreno scored a fantastic free-kick to pull one back for Numancia 11 minutes into the second half but they could not find a dramatic equaliser.

Madrid has three points, three behind Espanyol, the only team to have made a perfect start to the season.

Earlier, last season runners-up Villarreal saw off Deportivo La Coruna 1-0 at El Madrigal.

The Yellow Submarines, who will face Manchester United in the Champions League on Wednesday, secured their first win of the season through a fierce left-footed shot from winger Santi Cazorla in the 27th-minute.

Almeria drew 2-2 with Valencia on a return to Mediterraneo Stadium for Valencia coach Unai Emery, who led Almeria to an unexpected eighth-placed finish last season.

Pablo Piatti gave Almeria a 20th-minute lead before Los Che hit back via Alexis Ruano on 35 minutes.

The home side restored their lead just before half-time through Alvaro Negredo, but star striker David Villa fired a 69th-minute equalizer for the visitors.

On Saturday, Sevilla seized a thrilling 4-3 victory at home to Sporting Gijon, while Barcelona’s disappointing start to the season continued as they held to a 1-1 draw against Racing Santander at Nou Camp.

Atletico Madrid’s impressive start came to an end as they lost 2-1 to 10-man Real Valladolid.

Other results elsewhere were: Recreativo Huelva 0 Espanyol 1; Getafe 0 Real Betis 0; Malaga 0 Athletic Bilbao 0; Real Mallorca 1 Osasuna 1.
